Trail Takes

BktKinta9bLearn why 300 million years ago, Kinta Valley was nothing but a vast seabed teeming with primordial lifeforms. Today, Ipoh is wrapped by limestone hills that are embedded with rich prehistoric leftovers. Feel the breeze of its “wind tunnel” created by pressure difference between its interior and exterior cavern network. Be intrigued by its spellbinding “golden flowstone”.

If you can walk 3-4km in one stretch, with some ups and downs without puffing, you will have no problem with this caving trail that comes with heavy-duty steel walkway.

BktKinta9dThere are edible, medicine and useful plants tucked discreetly in every nook and corner of the rainforest. Learn about Malaysian’s incredible ecology with our expert naturalist.

If our naturalist introduces this plant as “tiger footprint” leaves (right), they are being kind and don’t want to spook you. However, the Malay name is “tapak hantu”, which literally translates to devil’s footprint. Thanks to its name, countryside children cringe at the sight of the leaves

(Left) Wild torch ginger. (Center) Dangling like pearl trinklets, bunches of wild “rambai” fruit provide a refreshing snack along the tribal village trail. (Right) Ipoh tree – the most poisonous tree in the rainforest. Its sap is extracted (note the crisscross marks on the tree trunk) to poison the tip of blow dart and used for hunting by the Orang Asli.

Weaver3Nature’s masterpiece – Watch how the Baya Weaver Bird make nest as part of the mating ritual. Female live inside a fully enclosed nest with the eggs and the hollow chute as entrance.

bukitkinta9hAlthough 90% of Malaysian wildlife is nocturnal (active by night), occasionally one can spot some animals during late afternoon. They usually flock riverbanks to take gulps of water or trot around the forest fringe to warm up before sunset.

BktKinta9fOrang Asli aborigines are the earliest inhabitants of peninsular Malaysia. Living in pockets of rainforest for thousands of years have kept their genetic makeup pure. In May 2005, researchers for the Genome Project found Orang Asli’s mitochondria DNA to match a 65,000 year old African sample – making them the direct descendants of the first Adams and Eves!

They have deep respect for the rainforest as have their fathers and the fathers before them. They ask for little and are contented with living at the fringes of the rainforest. They are governed by traditions, taboos and animism practices passed down from their forefathers. Orang Asli make up less that 1% of the total population in Malaysia with many still preferring age-old ways of gathering food and household materials from the jungle.

orangaslihut1Cultural barrier breaking is fine art – especially in the jungle. You have to understand their folk traditions, way of life and taboos to get on well. This trip will give one a rare opportunity to wander around and interact with Orang Asli with our experts acting as interpretor and link. Catch a glimpse of how jungle natives live off the land.

BktKinta9jEnd the day with a freshing dip in a hidden waterfall that flush down from Titiwangsa mountain range. The rainforest filtered water has high mineral content and will leave the skin soft and supple after bathing in it.

Don’t forget to bring along towel and spare clothes to enjoy its pristine water !
